Dr.Watson obtained three degrees at the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London. He joined the staff of the Univ. of Melbourne in 1969 and is now Deputy Head of Dept. of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with specialty in Transport Energy and Emissions. He leads a research team of 23 people which has investigations spanning combustion fundamentals through to the modelling of the behaviour of vehicles in traffic. The team's models of engine combustion includes their code FLOCOM which runs on a Cray computer. This code is validated using laser holographic measurement methods in a glass piston engine with 5000 r/min speed capability. The team have built two hydrogen fuelled cars and designed and developed seven hydrogen engines of both spark ignition and diesel dual fuel type. The team's vehicle test facilities are unique in Australia, comprising 17 engine test stands and a computer controlled vehicle emissions test facility with a speed capability of 240 km/h for vehicle up to 12 tonnes.
