Stan
Thompson holds a bachelor’s degree from Pfeiffer University and is a
Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
He is retired after 33 years at AT&T, where he worked as an
engineer, strategic planner, market manager, and as the environmental
and transportation futurist on the Market Assessment and Analysis Team
that developed future world and national scenarios for officers’ use in
strategic business planning. In 2004, in the International Journal of
Hydrogen Energy, he coined the now-universal term of art for hydrogen
railway propulsion technology, “hydrail”. With Mayor Bill Thunberg, he
developed the Mooresville hydrail initiative to debut commuter hydrail
technology between Mooresville and Charlotte, North Carolina (still
pending). In 2005, he conceived and, with Appalachian State University,
helped to organize 1IHC—the First International Hydrail Conference. The
following year the Hydrail Conference (2IHC) was held in Herning,
Denmark. 3IHC was held at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, USA. 4IHC
was in Valencia, Spain; 5IHC was at the University of North Carolina’s
Charlotte Research Center; and last year the United Nations Industrial
Development Organization hosted 6IHC in Istanbul, Türkiye, at
ICHET, the International Center for Hydrogen Energy Technology. The
annual Hydrail Conferences played an important role in the formation of
the Ph.D. program in hydrogen railway technology at the University of
Pisa, Italy. Stan Thompson has spoken on hydrail in the USA, Canada,
Denmark, The UK, Belgium, Spain and Türkiye.
